Ariel was born in Ciudad De La Habana, Cuba in 1977. He took his first steps toward art, guided by his mother Gipcia Monterrey, at the age of eight. Gipcia enrolled Ariel and his brother Sandro in, "La Casa De La Cultura” (Cultural House) where he developed his artistic vision through painting. At the age of 20, inspired by his love for art and music, he decided that he was ready for a career change. With the help from his brother and, again, the Cultural House of Havana, he embarked on a journey of a lifetime.
After his first year of battling chord progressions and bleeding fingers, Ariel started to write his own compositions and performing wherever he could. It was during those years Ariel had the opportunity to record his first demo, "No Quiero Morir” in one of Havana's Best Venues, Almadeo Roldan. To make his dream come true, he gathered the best musicians he knew, both Cuban and International alike. After several years of playing and evolving as a musician, he moved to United States, where he currently lives with his wife and 2 children. Since moving, Ariel has continued to play live in local café's, bars and weddings. He can be heard on the local radio station KRSH (95.9) and has a new live album, “Live on the KRSH".
Nueva trova is a movement in Cuban music that emerged around 1967/68 after the Cuban Revolution of Jan 1st 1959, and the consequent political and social changes.
This new gener has its roots in the traditional trova, but differs from it because its content is, in the widest sense, political. It combines traditional folk music with ‘progressive’ and often politicized lyrics. It is related to La Nueva Canción in Latin America. Some of the nueva trova musicians were also influenced by rock and pop of that time.
Nueva trova is defined by its lyrics. The lyrics attempt to escape the banalities of life by concentrating on injustice, sexism, colonialism, racism and similar 'serious' issues.
